When I need to break out of a rut I’ll do sketches. Here is one of a girl from a photo. I liked the angle of her pose.

I’ve updated the wildlife photography page with new photos! Click the link below to view the gallery:

I thought it would be fun to try making a lifelike representation of Hatshepsut, the Egyptian Queen who reigned in the Middle Kingdom roughly 4000 years ago. I used a statue of her as a reference as well as contemporary artifacts including the headdress and banded necklace that would have been worn by pharaohs.
I think I did a pretty good job though I certainly stretched this project out longer than I ever would have imagined. Life has been a bit hectic and stressful and taking time to paint seemed difficult. But I stuck to it and finished it.
I love ancient Egypt and someday I hope to make a visit there to see the monuments and artifacts of that time period firsthand.
I’ve created another wildlife photography page in our never-ending quest to collect a glimpse of nature’s denizens in all the places that we travel. We were in Arkansas in October of 2023 and spent enough time outdoors at places like Hot Springs National Park, Garvan Woodland Gardens, Eureka Springs and Mount Magazine to discover some of its wildlife.
It’s a smaller collection since we were there only a few days Wildlife of Arkansas. And as always a lot of what we saw escaped our ability to capture it with our camera. But here is the Wildlife of Arkansas.
We weren’t far enough south to see the full ring of fire, but in Colorado we saw a pretty cool partial eclipse. Starting from the first image is at 9:45 AM MDT and the last in the sequence is at maximum at 10:36 AM MDT.

Montana now joins the list of wildlife photography pages. In only a few days we saw quite a number of animals and enjoyed the beautiful flora as well. It was unseasonably warm and I think that led to some animals retreating to higher and more remote ground, but I think you’ll find the gallery quite good all the same. View the gallery...

I finished this today. It actually started as a sketch of a different bird but the second I started painting I realized I wanted to paint a red-tailed hawk.
We have a lot of these birds in the western US and I always enjoy seeing them perched on fences and telephone poles. They are at home in the countryside so I painted a farmstead in the background.
