Glacier National Park Painting

This is my last painting of 2023 and the next of my national park paintings. This is a view over Grinnell Lake from where we hiked last summer on the Grinnell Glacier trail.

Red-tailed Hawk

I finished this today. It actually started as a sketch of a different bird but the second I started painting I realized I wanted to paint a red-tailed hawk.

We have a lot of these birds in the western US and I always enjoy seeing them perched on fences and telephone poles. They are at home in the countryside so I painted a farmstead in the background.

Depths of Despair

I decided to paint something that incorporated a mermaid, pirate lore, and the undersea world. I ended up creating this scene with a tearful mermaid at the site of a shipwreck. I included some pirate mythology into the scene including the hourglass (which symbolizes the time of death).

Grand Canyon

I decided to do something a bit different and decided that a lightning storm sky would bring an added dimension to the painting. I had to use multiple photos to piece together the painting from Yaki Point. There are trails visible in the lower left corner.

We’ve been to Grand Canyon several times over the years and sometime I’m going to hike all the way to the river and also to Havasu Falls. Both are on the bucket list.

The Victorian Bride

I found a photo taken in the late 1800s of a girl that I presume was wearing a wedding dress and decided to paint a color portrait of it. I made some changes for the chair and provided a background but otherwise retained much of the detail of the photograph.
